Compliance: be compliant to the latest requirements
Naturally, you want to work like you always do. But when it comes to information exchange with customs, you might want to limit your personal preferences. Because customs has strict demands regarding the how, when and what kind of information they receive. Save yourself a headache dossier and make sure that your software complies to their administrative requirements. Check beforehand what these requirements are and test if your potential supplier is up-to-date.
Functionality: does the solution support all necessary customs streams?
Not all customs flow are the same. For example, do you carry out the administrative tasks of excise duty? Then customs requires a completely different tax return than when you bring in animal products, for example. Create a checklist of the customs flows that your software needs to cover.
Manual or automation: what fits your organization best?
Would you like to register data manually? Or do you prefer to digitize the process from beginning to end? Both options are possible. Is the number of tax returns within limits? Then a completely automated digital process is often unnecessarily expensive. Do you weekly send tens – or hundreds – of tax returns? For the implementation procedure and -costs, it makes quite a difference if you receive a connection out-of-the-box or if the supplier needs to realize it first.
Tip: Often you – besides customs – deal with your customers’ system a lot as well. And perhaps your organization makes use of several systems for WMS, TMS or freight forwarding.
